Exposure to the giardia parasite causes a diarrheal illness known as giardiasis. Infection happens by ingesting the giardia cysts in soil, food, or water that has been contaminated with feces (poop) from infected humans or animals.&nbsp; Giardia Cysts are protected by an outer shell that allows it to survive for a long time.  The hard outer shell even makes them tolerant to chlorine. &nbsp;While the parasite can be spread in different ways, water (drinking water and recreational water) is the most common mode of transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"lifecycle\">Life cycle and infection of the giardia parasite<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Infection occurs by the ingestion of cysts.&nbsp; &nbsp;The cysts escape their encapsulation in the small intestine.  Once released from their hard shell, two adult parasites emerge.  Adult parasites are called trophozoites.  These trophozoites remain in the small intestine, where they multiply.&nbsp; Encystation (returning to the cysts) occurs as the parasites moves toward the colon. At this point we may find the cysts in non-diarrheal (seemingly normal) feces. The cysts are infectious when passed in the stool and shortly afterward. These herbs can also be used as a preventative in cases of recurring giardia infection.&nbsp; All three herbs above contain Berberine, an alkaloid responsible for their anti-microbial and anti-protozoa actions.&nbsp; Pretty handy to have on hand when discouraging the growth of bugs, bacterial overgrowth and parasites.&nbsp; Each is a digestive and liver tonic.  All stimulating the release of protective enzymes from the stomach and pancreas, and increasing bile secretions.
